18yearold Narendra Kumar is an Indian teenager who has been suffering from chronic stomach pains for a long time. He and his family couldn’t understand what was causing his continuous vomiting and subsequent weight loss.
They decided to consult an expert.
They were all shocked to find out that the one responsible for his chronic pain was his twin! All along, Narendra had a parasitic twin living inside him since birth.
Surgeons operated on him immediately and took out the grim cause of his illness.
“The boy’s stomach grew, but his plight went undiscovered for years because neither his parents were of his medical condition nor the doctors could diagnose the condition at an early stage,” Dr. Rajeev Singh of Swaroop Narayan Hospital in Uttar Pradesh stated.
“Technically, the fetus was alive and was growing due to metabolic activity in his body.”
According to Dr. Singh, Narendra's twin was a parasite feeding off him after forming an umbilical cordlike structure that attached to his stomach. This resulted in the 18-year-old's blood deficiency.
After the operation, doctors were stunned with what they extracted from the teenager's body. It was a 2.5kg mass of bone, hair, and teeth 20cms in length with a 2meter long trunk of hair.
“In the threehourlong surgery, we removed a mass of malformed baby having hair, teeth, a poorly developed head, a bony structure of chest and spine with lots of yellowish amnioticlike fluid in the sac," Dr. Singh stated.
Narendra's condition is called ‘fetus in fetu.’ It is very rare as only 200 cases have ever been reported worldwide. It occurs in about 1 in every 500,000 births. ‘Fetus in fetu’ happens when a partially developed fetus becomes incorporated into a normally developing one (its twin) inside their mother's womb.
