If history has taught us anything, it’s that sometimes human beings can be cruel and awful creatures.
Groundbreaking performance artist Marina Abramovic showed us the lengths of humanity’s tolerance for order and law when she introduced us to her most famous and controversial work - “Rhythm 0.”
In Miss Abramovic’s art piece, she simply stood still for 6 hours with an audience while a table had been setup with 72 items that could be used on her.
These were the instructions that were written on the table in front of her.
There are 72 objects on the table that one can use on me as desired.
I am the object.
During this period I take full responsibility.
Duration: 6 hours (8 pm – 2 am)”
Some of the items on the table included: a feather, perfume, a rose, honey, bread, grapes, wine, scissors, a scalpel, nails, and a gun loaded with one bullet.
At first, the experiment/art piece was tame. The audience gave her kisses and the rose. Some of them were silly. They changed her body position, lifted her arms and even wrote things on her skin.
During the 3rd hour of the sixth, the audience began to turn nasty – and began using the more dangerous items.
Her clothes were cut up using the razors and scissors. She was stripped and endured minor sexual assault when the audience began touching her in inappropriate places. Some took the rose thorns and poked her skin with them.
A man used the razor on her neck and licked some of her blood.
Another took the loaded gun and made her point it to herself. It had gotten so heated that some audience members had began fighting with each other because of the gun.
When the six hours had passed and the work was over, Ms. Abramovic stood up and walked towards her audience.
They ran away because they were unable too ashamed to face her after the experience (especially those who visited violence upon her)
She felt their aggression and then their shame after the performance.
It just goes to show how bad some people can become when all rules are thrown out – some of us turn to monsters.
