Some people would not notice this immediately, but there are people who have extra tiny holes in their ears. These tiny holes are called preauricular sinus. Although they are not harmful, they can sometimes be infected.
According to statistics, people who live in Africa and Asia are more prone to have this congenital trait. Meanwhile, only few are born with preauricualr sinus in United Kingdom and United States. So where did this deformity come from?
An evolutionary biologist named Neil Shubin proposed a theory that it could be an ‘evolutionary remnant of fish gills’. However, it has yet to be proven.
UN National Library of Medicine on the other hand explained that preauricular sinus develop during the early stages of fetal development. Although it is relatively painless, it could lead to infections or cysts.
A study from Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia explained that preauricular sinus could include a puss-filled mass which has to be removed to avoid bacterial infections. Experts recommend taking antibiotics if the infection becomes severe.
Most doctors also suggest that people with this kind of condition should undergo medical surgery to avoid more serious diseases. While some people think that it should be attended, others are contented leaving it alone.
