In a small town near Moscow, Russia known as Strunin a family was trapped in their fifth story apartment by dark smoke and flames. They were cutoff from any other exit through the front of the unit and were forced to do the seemingly unthinkable.
The brave father had to think on his feet as flames devoured their home. The dark smoke had attracted a group of bystanders below the apartment and the father threw a large sheet or carpet down to them.
The 20 or so men were gathered below the apartment and took hold of the sheet eager to rescue the otherwise trapped family.
First the father threw their youngest child who was easily caught by the bystanders, followed by their older son. The mother then took to the ledge and was given a helping push by her husband.
The drop itself was not the most dangerous part of this whole ordeal, there was a smaller building (perhaps a shed) at the base of their apartment that extended out from the wall by 2 to 3 meters. This means the family has to clear this building to reach the catch sheet that the bystanders were holding.
With wife and two kids safe and sound on the ground it was his turn to take a leap of faith, however he did not have anyone to help with a push to clear the building below. He stood at the ledge of his balcony, made the sign of the cross and took the plunge.
He arced down through the air amidst the smoke, cleared the building and was caught by the bystanders. Due to his larger size he did suffer minor injuries to his spine from the fall. But at least he still has his family with him.
