Asian parents are known to be strict, believing that it is the best way to discipline their kids and prepare them for a bright future. However, some parents overlook putting much pressure under their kids thinking that what they’re giving them is just the right amount. There are actual cases of parents ‘locking their children up’ to study, and even children committing suicide when their parents hand them too much responsibilities.
Jennifer Pan, a Canadian-Vietnamese student, had parents who always pressured her ever since she started studying. It was a must for her to achieve straight A’s. This upbringing has made her a competent student. She fulfilled her father’s wishes to have the best marks until 8th grade. However, her grades started to slide down as she constantly received B’s.
Her parents, especially her father, weren’t pleased with her report card results. This led her to fake everything, from her application to University of Toronto, up to her graduation, and eventually her job—everything was staged. She lied to her parents about her working as a pharmacist in a hospital like what her father wanted for her. But when Jennifer’s parents told her to break up with her boyfriend Daniel, that was when she flipped out.
Together with her Daniel, they conspired to murder her parents. They hired an assassin to kill Jennifer’s parents and made it look like they were victims of invasion. Her mother was killed and her father received serious injuries. However, after two weeks of her mother’s death, Jennifer felt the remorse and admitted her crime.
She was sentenced to 25 years of imprisonment without parole.
