The online community was disturbed to see a video that showed cruelty to a poor Vietnamese little girl. She was tied up by her wrists and screaming as she was punished by her foster mother for allegedly taking a carton of milk.
The child was suspended a few a few feet above the ground. Her hands were tied to a horizontal pole in of a building in Vinh Phuc Province. She could be seen struggling as she wailed her heart out, clearly because of pain and fear of being hung.
The upsetting footage uploaded online caused distress amongst citizens in the country which also caught the attention of authorities. Fortunately, the little girl suffered no harm and her foster mother, Nguyen Thi Phuong was arrested for the violent act.
The little girl was put into foster care after her parents got into jail in their hometown Phu Tho province for unknown offenses.
Phuong’s husband was not identified and authorities were not sure whether he had knowledge on how his wife is treating their supposedly foster daughter. He was not taken by the police.
The foster mother said that the little girl would often steal groceries from time to time to sell them for pocket money. Apparently she manages a local grocery shop. According to Phuong, she had reprimanded the child many times, but still kept misbehaving.
In Phuong’s testimony at the police station, she said she just had to punish the little girl when she caught her trying to steal a carton of milk to drink.
Le Chi Thai, deputy chairman of Vinh Tuong District shared the incident to Tuoi Tre (Youth) newspaper. The child was brought to a hospital to be checked where it was discovered that she had no severe physical damages. Thai described the act of the foster mother as ‘unacceptable’ and that she would be sued for it.
The five-year-old girl’s relatives took her from her foster parents.
