Today’s fast-paced lifestyle led to the consumption of anything instant, such as technology, shopping, and food. Most Pinoys eat instant food because it’s fast, affordable, and satisfying. Instant noodles like pancit canton and mami became merienda staples. Processed food, like tocino, longganisa, and hotdog, was the usual breakfast fare paired with rice.
Craving for something sweet? Have some candies and chocolates to satisfy your sweet tooth. How about some softdrinks or powdered mix juice to cool down?
These food items may be cheap, but they come with a price.
One should know that processed food and drinks are laden with preservatives and additives to prolong shelf life and improve taste. Consuming too much could lead to long-term and life-threatening illnesses.
Take the case of Nicole, 21 years old and a mother of two. She was healthy, until she complained of headaches and dizziness, with bouts of blurred vision and memory gaps. Her family brought her to a hospital to have her checked.
After a series of CT scans and laboratory tests, the doctors diagnosed Nicole with a stage 4 brain cancer.
According to her sister Jenna, the tumor found in Nicole’s brain was a Glioblastoma Multiforme (GBM), a highly malignant tumor. In the latest Facebook post of Jenna, 98% of the GBM was already removed. However, her sister still has to undergo chemotherapy and radiation therapy, which are both expensive and will strain the family’s resources.
Nicole’s family didn’t have a history of cancer, and she was the first one to have it. Jenna realized that her sister loved to eat processed meat like hotdog, longganisa, and tocino, and instant noodles. She enjoys candies, chocolates, and carbonated drinks.
Jenna ended her post with a warning to avoid processed as much as possible. She also advised people to be more careful with what they eat and exposure to stress and gadgets. There are numerous studies about cancer and its relation to food consumption, but no direct correlation was established yet.
