Actress and TV host Toni Gonzaga is at the top of her game. She started her career as a Kapuso talent but is now a bonafide Kapamilya.
She was famous for her wacky Sprite commercial, spawning the catchphrase, “I love you, Piolo!” This made GMA take notice, and cast her as one of the hosts on the Philippines’ longest running noontime show, Eat Bulaga.
As part of the Dabarkads, Toni took part in a number of the crazy games. And boy, were they insane!
On its official YouTube account, Eat Bulaga recently posted a video of its 2002 Bulagaan Olympic, back when Toni was still a host.
In the game, the hosts had to eat whatever was on the plate assigned to them. When she uncovered her plate, Toni was shocked to find out that she had to eat live shrimp!
Living, swimming shrimp!
Joey de Leon, one of the hosts, told her: “Kailangan maubos mo yan, mga hipon na buhay!”
It was no small feat for Toni as she cried when she took her first bite of the shrimp. Her eyes were watery and she tried so hard to keep the small fry in her mouth.
Perhaps she was crying for the poor shrimp that she had to consume? It was no bitter pill but it still seemed like Toni had a hard time swallowing the shrimp.
Her teammates cheered her on, as they bore witness. Toni almost vomited a few times, but she was steadfast. Hang in there, girl!
It was hard, but she was eventually able to do it. When the last shrimp passed down her throat, Joey praised her, “Iba si Toni, kinain ang buhay na hipon!”
It was no surprise that another host ended up with a similar plate. The late great Francis Magalona was the (un)lucky one.
Unfortunately for Francis, he was unable to stomach the challenge. Toni was seen heckling him as she watched from the sidelines.
“Ito ang champion! Kumain ng buhay na hipon!” Joey declared as he raised Toni’s arm.
